If my blog was a person and I was supposed to be its best friend, I would be a terrible best friend and my blog would be bitter and hurt right now, for I forgot her birthday.
On March 5th, my blog turned one.
On March 5th, 2007 I began recording my thoughts here because I needed a writing outlet and also a place to purge my obsessive thoughts on child rearing. I was pregnant at the time with the Lil' Man, although it was too early to announce. So posts about my pregnancy with him began a few months later. And Z was still enjoying life as an only child.
I started this blog because I felt my brain turning to mush. My writer's soul was curled up in the fetal position on the couch, watching The Cosby Show reruns. It seemed like all I could think about anymore was how to navigate the rocky terrain of motherhood. So I figured I might as well write about it on the internet. I'm the kind of person who needs the discipline of a deadline, and the support of others, in order to achieve anything. So the blog served as a blinking cursor, impatiently waiting for the first word.
What began as a selfish endeavor has become so much more. Who knew you could find companionship in the blogosphere? Who knew there were so many smart mommies out there who were also itching to write? Who had funny and insightful things to say on a daily basis.
Who knew that I'd be buying a ticket to attend a conference about blogging, so I could hear some of them speak in person. So I could shake their hands. Maybe even meet their kids.
I've only done part of what I set out to do. The other day Andi reminded me that this blog was also started to help me craft some practice essays. Because, like her, I have a strong desire to see my name in print. Which brings me to the thing I'd never planned on getting out of this blog, and that's the inspiration I get from the mommies I've come to know.
I am ever so grateful to have found this community of women. And I am so looking forward to getting to know you all better in the years to come.
